As a fairly new resident of Christchurch myself, I know how hard it can be to find places to eat and drink that are actually worth your money. So I’ve made it easy for you! Below is a list of recommendations that I have personally tried, and my honest opinions on them. As a student, my perspective of the budget may be slightly different from that of a tourist, however, it’s always good to consider prices anyway!
The Thirsty Peacock
Whilst it is expensive compared to others on this list, the Thirsty Peacock offers a first-class dining experience, with an exceptional menu. Sitting right next to the Christchurch Art Gallery, the restaurant provides a private dining experience after a visit. All of the food and drinks were amazing, including my pea risotto which I did have doubts about. It turned out to be the best risotto I’ve ever had! They are also allergy-friendly and able to adapt most of the meals on the menu to make them gluten-free. This restaurant has definitely got to be my personal favourite, making it 100% worth the price!
Cafe Valentino
Another personal favourite that has everything there is to offer! Cafe Valentino is your stereotypical Italian restaurant, however, the food quality is well above average. All the dishes are large and rich in flavour, and with an extensive menu, there is something for everyone! All pizzas and pasta can also be made gluten-free, with many other dishes also adaptable to any dietary requirements. Not only is the food amazing, but their cocktails are to die for! My go to – April Sun In Sicily
Park Ranger
If you’re looking for a tasty place for breakfast, brunch, or lunch, Park Ranger is the place to go! With both a menu and cabinet food, and a large selection of drinks, this spot is perfect for any situation. They also have a large variety of milk, vegan, and gluten-free options. The Park Ranger is also a healthier option compared to many other places, with some delicious smoothie bowls, porridge and more! The cafe also sits right across from Riccarton Mall, making it the perfect place to stop for a lunch break on your shopping day!
Kaiser Brewery
Now that we’re on the topic of cocktails, why not introduce you to my favourite cocktail place! Although Kaiser is a brewery, (and don’t get me wrong, they do still have amazing beers), their cocktails are something else. I’ve never been so in love with a drink until I had a Kaiser cocktail. The food there is also delicious, and not to mention its perfect location on a rooftop along the Avon River! This side of town is always full of vibrant culture and a must-visit.
Utopia Ice
Utopia Ice is not just any old ice cream store; Their flavours are something out of Willy Wonka, creations you would never even think of! Not only are their flavours incredible, but there are also lots of dairy-free options and even a gluten-free waffle cone. Nor from Sumner Beach, Utopia Ice provides a sweet treat and a shady little fairy garden to enjoy your ice creams!
The Raspberry Cafe
A visit to the Raspberry Cafe is a perfect day trip for you and your family. Berry picking in the morning, and retire to the idyllic, cottage cafe for lunch. The food is delicious and full of flavour, and the menu offers both traditional lunch food and some one-of-a-kind dishes too. With the option to sit inside the cosy cottage, or outside amongst the picturesque garden and trees, the Raspberry Cafe provides the perfect city escape, whilst still being in close enough proximity to Christchurch City.
The Riverside Market
Located in Central Christchurch City, along the banks of the Avon River, the Riverside Market is an indoor food market with a range of different cuisines. You can purchase light snacks, sweet treats, full meals, or try them all! With seating above the stalls, the market is a perfect place for groups as it caters to all needs and there’s something for everyone, but you can all still sit and eat together! If you’re really into your food, why not try a cooking class in the kitchen upstairs or visit the rooftop bars and restaurants also accessible through the Riverside Market
